Entering an ice cave on the Vatnajökull glacier, I found it's heart. Vatnajökull glacier is the largest glacier in Europe and covers eight per cent of Iceland's land mass. It has a surface area of approximately 8100 square kilometers (3127 square miles). It's average thickness is over 1600 feet (0.5 kilometers) and, in parts, it is over three thousand feet (one kilometer) thick.
