Hiking on the Votnajökull glacier, I crested a ridgeline and found myself standing at the edge of Jötunheim, the realm of giants in Norse mythology. Staring down at me was the skull of a giant, likely felled by Thor, their eternal enemy. The dwelling places of the giants are described as mountain peaks where winter never releases its grip or in deep, dark forests.
