Unable to stay submerged for as long as his mother, a humpback calf heads for the surface to take a breath.  On average, adult humpbacks surface every 7-15 minutes to breath, but can remain submerged for up to 45 minutes.  Calves must rise to the surface every 3-5 minutes.
