Heart of the Glacier
Shortly after entering an ice cave on the Vatnajökull Glacier, I found its icy heart. This was the fist ice cave I had ever been in and it was like walking into a fairy tale. Vatnajökull Glacier is the largest glacier in Europe and covers eight per cent of Iceland's land mass. It has a surface area of approximately 8100 square kilometers (3127 square miles). Its average thickness is over 0.5 kilometers (1600 feet) and, in parts is over one kilometer (3000 feet) thick.
