I was lucky enough to be present when nearly eighty rarely seen offshore orcas appeared in Monterey Bay. Among them were many young orcas like this one, swimming with his mother. Highly intelligent and highly social, orcas are matriarchal and lessons are passed on to the young by the matriarchs of the pod.
